Opera Lively interviewed Mr. Portari when he was in the role of Pinkerton in our partners Opera Carolina's production of Madama Butterfly. [Opera Lively interview # 29]
Mr. Fernando Portari is a noted Brazilian tenor, and has performed in several prestigious houses abroad. He is excellent as Pinkerton, a role that is dear to him as well, since it was the one he sang first for his professional debut two decades ago. He is a fine actor who read the character from a more romantic standpoint, trying to avoid the cliché of a leacherous and despicable playboy - a choice Mr. Portari justifies by underlining that Puccini's music for Pinkerton is very delicate and romantic, unlike the recitative parts that underline the character's moral shortcomings.
