Opera Holland Park’s seventeenth season opens next week with Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (7 June). All six of the operas featuring on the main stage are given in brand new productions and packed into 58 days. The 2012 season builds on Opera Holland Park’s winning formula – established under the dedicated leadership of James Clutton (Producer) and Michael Volpe (General Manager) – of staging a mixture of verismo discoveries and adventurous productions of well-loved classics.

As well as Lucia di Lammermoor, other classics this season are Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Tchaikovsky’s Yevgeny Onegin and Verdi’s towering comedy of human frailty, Falstaff.

A particular highlight is a rare performance of Zanetto, a one-act opera by Pietro Mascagni, paired with Puccini’s hilarious dig at greed and snobbery, Gianni Schicchi, being staged by Opera Holland Park for the first time. Alan Opie sings the title role, and many Opera Holland Park regulars will form an impressive ensemble as the quarrelsome Donati family members.

In a bold initiative that reflects Opera Holland Park’s commitment to nurturing young British talent, for one performance of Gianni Schicchi the whole cast, with the exception of Alan Opie, will be replaced by young singers on the brink of professional careers taking part in the Christine Collins Young Artist scheme. They will have full rehearsals, language coaching, and sessions with the orchestra and with Alan Opie, just as the main cast would, and will give a matinee performance which audiences can enjoy for just £20 or £12, in the year 2012. Zanetto, featuring its normal cast, will also play alongside Schicchi at this performance.

Among the other singers are many Opera Holland Park favourites such as Elizabeth Llewellyn (Countess in Cosí), Anna Leese (Tatyana in Onegin), Olafur Sigurdarson (Falstaff), Julia Riley (Dorabella in Cosí), Janice Watson (Sylvia in Zanetto), Mark Stone (Onegin) and a particularly notable debut for Russian soprano Elvira Fatykhova (Lucia). The City of London Sinfonia remains the resident orchestra for the season.

Children of all ages have another chance to see the delightful opera created from a Roald Dahl story and specially commissioned in 2010 by Opera Holland Park. Fantastic Mr Fox, with music by Tobias Picker and a libretto by Donald Sturrock, will be performed in the beautiful gardens and natural scenery of Holland Park itself. Tickets cost just £2.50 for children and £5 for adults.

In a new initiative Opera Holland Park, which is already known for making 1000s of free and discounted tickets available to unexpected audiences, made more seats than ever available at £12 via its ‘Sponsor an INSPIRE seat’ scheme, which invited Friends and patrons to donate a sum in order to convert full-priced seats to £12.

TICKETS FOR OPERA HOLLAND PARK 2012

Tickets for Opera Holland Park in 2012 cost between £12 and £65.50, making world-class opera accessible. Around 500 free tickets and further discounted tickets are available to people aged 60 or over who are resident in Kensington and Chelsea and living on a lower income, while a total of 1,200 free tickets are available for the young people between the ages of nine and 18.

Tickets for Fantastic Mr Fox cost just £2.50 for children and £5 for adults.
