Talking Russian opera for real Russian opera lovers

I didn't like the title so much, but I would like just Russian opera lovers to be here. I love Russian opera and...well I want to share from your experiences. Rimsky-Korsakov, Moussorgsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky... But just opera.

    Thank you!

Greetings and welcome to the forum.

My brother lived in Russia for a while. His daughter is Russian-American. In her honor, I tried to do a research project to study Russian opera. There is a lot of good material. I am very respectful of "Boris Godunov" and love "Eugene Onegin".

That is great indeed... What do you know about the great Rimsky-Korsakov and Glinka?

I don't recall what I've seen of Rimsky-Korsakov. For Glinka, I was sure to see one of Anna Netrebko's early roles in "Ruslan and Lyudmila". I will admit to you it has been a while since I studied Russian opera.

Frankly, I supposed this thread would not be very active, but desert? I am very disappointed. Just Western opera works in England and in the USA. In France, Russian opera is very much loved. Here I guess, just Italian and German opera...sometimes a Janaček or Dvorak here and there.

    Martin, disappointed

    Hi Martin,

I'm currently working on creating English subtitles for a video of Eduard Nápravník's "Dubrovsky" (in collaboration with several native Russian speakers).

The initial translation is complete and I am currently revising all 1831 lines of English subs! This will be a custom DVD containing two versions of the same 1961 video: the original, abridged telefilm and a special composite that I created in which as much of the excised music is reinstated and subtitled into English.

I am currently trying to enlist a French-speaker who is willing to translate some lines in French that are included in the opera. I posted these lines in the French language section of this forum in the hope that someone might respond.

You might also be interested to know that a recent outdoor production of Rubinstein's "The Demon" was staged in St. Petersburg and can be viewed online:

Well, Aleko is not a very difficult opera nor a very good one. Nesterenko quite nice, but I am sure the Neeme Jarvi having 3 operas is quite decent. You also have a DVD, more than an interesting option. I am not a Rachmaninov's fan...I like Francesca di Rimini very much though! The miserely knight is quite dark

Diifferent kind. Personally I prefer Tsarskaya Neviesta, it is more consistent, it is also a drama...one of his few dramas. Tsar's bride has wonderful arias and it is considered as his very Masterpiece... But I cannot or would not like to discuss tastes...Important aspect: there is JUST ONE GOOD VERSION!!!!! (IMHO) Galina Vizhnestkaya and Irina Arkhova, the others are quite bad, Gergiev's is not good and more expensive.

Kiteszh has got some great music. I watched this DVD.

My copy had terrible synch problems which I knew would happen because others have had similar issues. The production wasn't beautiful or magic but I still enjoyed it, for the wonderful musical depictions of nature, and the exciting battle music, and the lovely Tatiana Monogarova.

Now I'm listening to this CD,

but the first part was spoiled for me by the presence of Yuri Marusin. I just cannot stand his voice, kind of like a crying labrador. Luckily the prince disappears off and won't be prominent until the end (which does drag on a bit)
