    OK, sorry, I didn't read the whole thread and didn't even notice that Nat was referring to The 39 Steps. I just read your post and I went - What? - and reacted with a knee jerk.

    I should have known better that my cultured friend was just being funny. It's the thing with the Internet - no body language or tone of voice, so without a smiley sometimes the humor gets lost.

    Oh so many depressing books - Tess, Jude, the Mayor of Casterbridge... Last year though I read Far from the Madding crowd and it had a happy ending!!!
