Opera Lively's Virtual Opera Book Club

Moderator Amfortas has had a very nice idea. Here are his words:

    ---------

"We all love opera, and enjoy reading books on opera. There's even a thread devoted to book recommendations.

Sometimes a member will read an interesting book, then start a thread to discuss it. But since the rest of us haven't read the work in question, the conversation is necessarily limited.

I propose we remedy that problem by starting our own Opera Lively Book Club!

Each month, one member will select an opera-related book that can spark interesting discussion. The other club participants will endeavor to obtain said book (through hardcopy or electronic purchase, library loan, theft, etc.) and read it. Then we can discuss the text in far greater depth and detail than would otherwise be possible.

Of course, there would be no requirement to read every book or take part in all the discussions. But we would have a framework in place to facilitate some . . . . well, lively . . . interaction."

    ---------

We'll make of this idea a permanent feature of Opera Lively.

Each book will have its own thread. This notice is a closed thread so there will be no posting here, but I'll update this notice with a link to each book's thread so that new and existing members can join the discussions, or get informed about past discussions of worthy operatic books.

Do notice that we also have a general Opera Books thread in our Educational Area, where we just post book recommendations and brief comments (linked to, above).

The Virtual Opera Book Club, though, will have of course much more detailed discussions about each selected book.

    ---------

    The first one:

Click [here] for the thread; the book is The Cambridge Companion to Opera Studies, edited by Nicholas Till (Cambridge University Press, 2012), suggested by member Tyroneslothrop. The book's Amazon.com page is [here].

Discussion is just about to start as people are starting to order the book or trying to get it from their local libraries, as of today June 7, 2013. Once the discussion of this one runs its course, we'll select a second one and I'll update this announcement accordingly.

    Have fun!
