Strange experience. Listening now to the harpsichord concertos, which I thought I didn't know. So far, everything sounds delightfully familiar, like an old friend. Either this is all extremely well-known music, or I grew up hearing some parents' audio tape I've since forgotten about. I suspect a bit of both.

I watched "Woman in Gold" the other night (with Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds) - which tells the story of Maria Altman, whose family owned a number of Gustav Klimt paintings including "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer", which were seized by the Nazis, and what she had to go through to regain possession of the paintings from Austria.

I had followed her endeavors as they showed up in the news, and have seen Klimt's portrait in the Neue Galerie in New York (I was so fascinated by the painting and its workmanship that I got too close and a security guard had to drag me away) . I didn't realize that Maria Altman's lawyer, E. Randol Schoenberg, is the grandson of composer Arnold Schoenberg. There is a wonderful scene in the movie where he attends a performance of Verklärte Nacht in Vienna, which I found very moving. So, this morning's listening was downloaded from iTunes:

I recommend the movie, by the way - it also is harrowing in its showing the disruption of normal peoples' lives when the Nazis came to power. Maria Altman and her husband escaped Austria (most of her family did not) and moved to California. The movie had so-so reviews, based on the screenplay, but I found it powerful.

Your true nature has finally been revealed. I had my suspicions all along, though.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

A couple more purchases from my local second-hand store:

Less familiar repertoire from these two composers. I hadn't heard any of it before, but both CDs feature strong performances of what turns out to be lovely (particularly the Brahms) and lively (particularly the Prokofiev) music. A happy purchase I'll enjoy again and again.
