On Operabase, no performances by him are scheduled in the future. Looks like he has retired.

Edit - definitely "retired" - he died on July 22, 1989 at the tender age of 54, while dancing at his daughter's wedding.

Yes. My "isn't active anymore" was intentionally understated.

This would be a phenomenal performance which would definitely warrant me purchasing the DVD and a DVD player if it was published.

Guys, please keep me up to date on this.

Hoffmann, you're not thinking of Matti Salminen, are you? He still sings Fasolt and Faffner.

Here you are Clayton. Some nice operatic zombie nuns to make up for the disappointment.

Yes, I kind of thought that it would be slightly difficult for a man who has been dead for the last 24 years to be singing a Wagnerian role - you know, the dry throat thing and all. But I didn't want to aggravate my friend Hoffmann, so I didn't go any further than speculating that the singer might be retired. Maybe Operabase is just prejudiced against dead people, so that's why they didn't list his performances, not to forget that in opera, all is possible. I've seen people stabbed who keep singing and singing and singing. Weird. I thought that a punctured lung disrupted the breathing part, but apparently not.

    The ladies:

    Anna Caterina Antonacci
    Joyce DiDonato
    Anna Netrebko
    Elina Garanca
    Danielle de Niese
    Renée Fleming
    Eva-Maria Westbroek
    Susan Graham
    Diana Damrau
    Lisette Oropesa

    The gentlemen:

    Jonas Kaufmann
    Plácido Domingo
    Jay Hunter Morris
    Luca Pisaroni
    Bryn Terfel
    Matthew Polenzani
    Piotr Beczala
    Erwin Schrott
    Lawrence Brownlee
    Peter Mattei

I would have voted for Natalie Dessay but my husband says she has retired from the operatic stage. What a pity; she is still very young. I loved her in Giulio Cesare at the Met.

Yes, you are exactly right, thanks!

I did actually reply to this a couple of days ago, but my iPad apparently went for the 2nd glass of eggnog when I wasn't looking, and forgot to transmit. or something.

Interesting thread. I do not see Eva Mei in the totals, or is she no longer active?
