I don't want to subscribe to the torygraph, did you find some cunning way to get through the paywall?

I don't and I wouldn't but I just clicked on the link and it came up but I could only get it in full on the first go. I can only see a bit of it now.

[Love how Private Eye-isms have become so common. Grauniad, Tired & Emotional, Ugandan Affairs etc]

Without subscription I just got as far as "...[AN]... who is now, without doubt, Europe's biggest classical singer..."

are we talking about her weight again?

I made it as far as the proscribed topics -- cancellations and something else (her decision to go blonde?).

Very odd that I could see all of it at first. Proscribed topics were cancelling Norma and the suspicion that her and hubby come as a job lot.

She raised the topic of Norma herself and said she'd agreed to do it before she'd looked at what singing the role entailed. Once she started she didn't like the character and wouldn't be able to give it her all. I'm paraphrasing here from memory.

Parting shot from RC was that she'll probably do La Forza at ROH in 2019 'if she doesn't cancel'. His words.

Well they do. No one would employ Yusif so extensively on his own rather slender merits.

Well, The Anna also cancelled Aida in Salzburg in the past couple of weeks, replaced by someone named Victoria Yeo. My friend Elizabeth is a big Anna fan and was very disappointed.

One of the problems is that opera houses charge big prices for these high-end singers but do not refund the share of the increased ticket price when they cancel. A year ago, our Meistersinger tickets in Munich (with Jonas Kaufmann) cost something around €200 each - but neither an apology nor a refund. We ended up with the back bencher after the cover also called in sick. I don't want to think what those tickets in Salzburg must have cost.

Btw, she loved - loved - Peter Sellars' La Clemenza di Tito!
