    José Carreras

Happy Birthday to Josep Maria Carreras i Coll, better known as José Carreras. Born 6th December 1946.

    To celebrate, I'm watching this.

The production is traditional, the style is park n bark, the sub-titles are occasional, the picture is grainy, the sound ranges from poor to acceptable.

    But hey it's fabulous.

One of my favorite tenors -- love his recordings with Katia Ricciarelli. I also have an old VHS recording of a Christmas special he made in Austria that includes clips of a concert he gave in a church there (perhaps the "Silent Night" chapel). Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to have been reissued in DVD or Blu-ray format.

Nice interview with Carreras in today's Telegraph.

Nice article by Fred Plotkin. Carreras was my first real opera love and I wish I'd seen him live.

One of my favorites, too. Love his recordings with Ricciarelli, to include his ventures into lirico-spinto territory (Manrico, Cavaradossi, and the Karajan Radames with Agnes Baltsa's Amneris).

This is one of my favourite Carreras recordings (helps that it's with a wonderful mezzo and a great bass!):

I bought that when I was going through my 'buy everything by Carreras' phase without knowing anything about it. I think it's absolutely wonderful.

According to this article that appears on Jonas Kaufmann’s unofficial web site, JK is now an ambassador for the José Carreras Leukemia Foundation and will be the major guest star at the 14 December José Carreras Gala in Munich.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any versions in English. However, aside from the actual news, the rest of the article amounts to little more than the two tenors saying wonderful things about each other. (And, admittedly, the two of them are both wonderful.)
