The other two languages I speak, unfortunately very very rarely make any impact on my operatic pursuits (Portuguese, I speak it very fluently but I only know one or two modern operas in Portuguese) and Spanish (I'm fairly OK with it although probably it's not the most grammatically correct one) gives me just a few operas (Florencia en el Amazonas, Ainadamar, the zarzuela Luisa Fernanda, María de Buenos Aires, El Retablo de Maese Pedro, La Vida Breve...). I'd love to know Russian...
I'm rubbish at languages... Although saying that I too know the odd German word from secondary school and an increasing amount of Italian due to my overexposure to certain operas by Puccini and Verdi. You'd be surprised how often you can use some lines from Un Ballo In Maschera to sum up a situation.

Hi there, La Susanna! Sorry that I was MIA when you signed up for OL - I was out in sunny southern California visiting a couple of opera friends. We didn't do any opera this trip, but lots of plans coming up.

Put me down as another big Lohengrin fan - it was my second opera and remains one of my favorites. It's really too bad it isn't staged very often, at least here in the U.S. When you are on Spotify, be sure to keep an eye open for the Kempe/Jess Thomas/Elisabeth Grümmer CD set.

I'm not sure I have much more to say other than I don't think I've seen the dancing broccoli before. Opera will do that to a person!

    Welcome and enjoy!

Oh how awful for you, I'm so sorry to hear that.

I hope you start to feel a bit better soon.

Very sorry to hear this, but hopefully you are on the better side of all this. I had pneumonia last year and it is no fun at all. Hope you can get some opera on that iPad.

Thanks, Luiz, may take a while. But I've been listening to the great Met Parsifal. So much is well.

Thanks, Natalie. I've been watching the Met HD Tannhaueser. I don't really mind the Refrigerator. It's a tough sing .

But I feel very disappointed for Westbroek, who was sweet in Valkyrie. And of course the MEt can't throw an orgy for love or money.

    Opera is a great distraction

ONstage, no. But back in my younger, New York days . . .

But that's a story for another time.

    Feel better, Susanna!
