I am buying blu ray version solely because the production looks visually snazzy......Carmen is Rinat Shaham

The almost bare round stage is a concern, hard to keep visual interest up through entire opera unless direction is very clever.....

Actually, the 2013 release of this - different cover art, but the picture wouldn't copy over.

I know it's an old-fashioned version and it doesn't have countertenors crawling out of every corner, but, hey, I like Janet Baker.

Unless it leads you to open your wallet for this one as well...

Errrm... yes, it went down to money actually. I thought as I was approximately 338% over budget on November purchases, I thought I would try with the less than half price (but apparently almost equally respected) version...

Since this opera is included in Cincinnati's 2014 season, I want to familiarize myself with it before I attend the performance. (For which I should have plenty of time, since said performance won't take place until next June.)

Thanks to Nat for the recommendation.

I saw the Met production of Simon Boccanegra with Domingo on the picture box a while ago. I thought the sets and the costumes were absolutely superb but...

Now, inspired by Sospiro I thought I should listen to it with a different cast and bought the Abbado recording.

It arrived in the post just now. As I need to get in to the Aussie time zone for the cricket I must just have a late night opera today...

    The postman always rings twice.

Well actually he doesn't but he did today and delivered my latest.

And that's not the opera I purchased.

    Benjamin Britten, Billy Budd.

Sailing on the wave of the Britten centennial... (sorry; I could never be a poet or librettist)

Now I'm stuck for which one to listen to next...

I haven't yet listened to these - I bought them as MP3s off of Arkivmusic...

I bought this Opera Rara recording instead of the recording with Gruberova based upon Arkiv's reviews. I hope I didn't make a mistake:

    ?
Interesting! I didn't know she had made an earlier recording than the Bonynge one. Let us know what you think.

And I was thinking of exactly the same with the Linda di Chamounix; Edita or Opera Rara...

I look forward to hearing what you think of La Straniera!
