I don't really understand what's happening. The Staatsoper schedule is heavy with concerts, recitals, chamber concerts and ballet - which they've always done, but don't recall it as dominating as now. I don't know if this indicates a budget situation or the fact that the opera house doesn't really look ready to reopen - it's still heavily shrouded in scaffolding.

Given that it is some 4 years behind schedule, and that they seem to be fed up with the Schiller Theater (Barenboim spoke to the audience - in German - following the Pearl Fishers that he wants to be sure the audience will follow them back to the re-opened Unter den Linden because, after all, the Wall has fallen and it is now one Berlin, and people don't realize how difficult it has been at the Schiller Theater, that they had to make lots of compromises, etc.).

I was looking forward to the new opera house, but opera is nearly non-existent on the schedule in the fall and pretty bare in the winter - a new production of Tristan und Isolde in February (D. Tcherniakov with Andreas Schager and Anja Kampe and Ekaterina Gubanova as Brangäne, which should be interesting) along with Magic Flute/Don Giovanni and La Traviata - operas that are easily found anywhere.

Domingo as a tenor was great and renowned with a good catalog of recordings many considered among the best however he is not a Baritone!!!

The spring season for 2017/18 at the ROH sounds interesting. The 5 performances are

From the house of the dead
    Macbeth
    4.48 Psychosis
    Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk
    Lessons in love and Violence

Try picking just one performance from that choice...

Michigan Opera Theatre has Tosca coming next April, co-produced with the Cincinnati Opera. The MOT is right here in Detroit and I want to attend Tosca but so far I only see series tickets offered. I assume they want to push season tickets and will later open it up to individual opera ticket sales.

There are a couple other operas in their upcoming season, but no others that I am interested in.

    Glimmerglass Festival, summer, 2018

West Side Story (including original Jerome Robbins choreography)

    The Cunning Little Vixen

    The Barber of Seville

    Silent Night

    Unfortunately, artists not yet announced.

I can see heading back to Cooperstown for Cunning Little Vixen, West Side Story and Barber of Seville. My sister told me that she would go back for Barber if she also could see West Side Story. I rather like West Side Story, and I think she and her husband should find Barber of Seville charming (how could they not?), so an easy bargain. Plus, as long as I am in town, I think I should catch a performance of The Cunning Little Vixen while I can.

Actually there was quite a bit of dancing going on towards the end of the concert. It was mostly Anna and JK being funny if I remember correctly...
