I grossly underestimated Angela Gheorghiu all these years

I confess that I always had something against Angela Gheorghiu. She always rubbed me the wrong way. Having interviewed and befriended Roberto Alagna, the dislike only grew stronger.

Well, I just upgraded my satellite system, and it now delivers YouTube with very high quality to my large screen TV and 7.1 home theater. YouTube like I've never seen and heard before. Very loud. Very good sound.

So, I was playing with it, and bumped into one of her video clips. From there, I spent two hours listening to one after the other, and my jaw dropped.

    Wow!

What a singer! What a technique! What a timbre of voice!

Why have I been avoiding her for all these years?

Just listen to this, my friends:

    And this:

The National Anthem of Romania must be the most beautiful of all of them, all countries considered!

I will not argue with any comments about the beauty of her voice and her singing. She still irritates me, comes across as entirely self regarding. I know Annie is a fan through.

Yeah, I always thought the objections were to her personality and behavior, not her singing. It would be a shame if the one facet prevented you from enjoying the other.

While Angela Gheorghiu can be viewed as occasionally having a somewhat odious personality and behavior. Her talent though was never in doubt for me. The La Rondine she sings on with Alanga is incredibly fine (among the best recorded I think) and I like her in many other clips and performances I've seen. For example she suits the role of Tosca very well (though it may not require much acting on her part to play the title role). Definitely a singer that is marmite though in this case not usually due to her voice and acting which are more than up to standard 9 times out of 10.

I might have said this too many times on various threads but I have been a fan of Angela ever since I saw her at Covent Garden in Solti's La Traviata in 1994 (I think it was). It was one of the first operas I saw and for a long time she was the most beautiful woman in the world...

I only know her voice and characters she portrays on the stage and have never followed or studied her or any other opera singer or musician much otherwise. Whilst this means I probably miss out on a lot, it also means I've missed all the negatives as well. Call me an ostrich.
