    2012/2013 season announcements

Seattle Opera has announced its 2012/2013 season

    Turandot
    Fidelio
    La Cenerentola
    La bohème
    Voix Humaine/Suor Angelica

They only produce five operas per year and try to balance 'bread & butter' productions with something a bit different. They twinned Aleko with Bluebeard's Castle a couple of years ago.

Comments on their Facebook page seem enthusiastic.

A wonderfully balanced season program, too, with less familiar works included along with the more popular operas.

Wow, I'd love to see this Pecheurs. By the way, this reminds me that I'm pretty much due to write up the article about it. Darn, I forgot.

Opera San Jose has announced the 2012-13 season. It includes The Pearl Fishers, Die Fledermaus, Il Trovatore, Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi. A modest season, but I like the fact that there is The Pearl Fishes which I've never seen live. Tempting...

    We can has Met season!

    http://www.metopera-digital.org/meto...son2012-13#pg1

    First impressions:

Not quite sure about the new Elisire, but I'm not Bart Sher's biggest fan in this world either. Not sure what I think about Elisire as opening night, either ...
The Tempest looks very interesting, and hopefully LePage can redeem himself after his recent Ring.
The new Ballo sounds kind of boring, but could be interesting. Kathleen Kim! Yay!
Not sure about Maria Stuarda. JDD will be great, I am sure, but the production seemed a little 'meh'
Rigoletto seems rather like a generic update, but could be fun.
The Parsifal looks AWESOME, and I think it's the production I'm most looking forward to of the next season. I didn't know Peter Mattei sang Wagner, though.
Giulio Cesare should be good. Not sure about Daniels and Dessay, though.

Tito should be good. Although Barbara Frittoli as Vittelia? Really? But yay, Kate Lindsey!
It is really a shame that the Dialogues of the Carmelites isn't being broadcast.
Roberto Alagna looks funny when he's orange.
    Yay, Francesca da Rimini!
    Crap. Domingo's conducting Otello.
Diana Damrau is making her Met debut of Violetta. Why hasn't the Met staged a new production for her?

Oh wow, a bit disappointing, only one truly contemporary opera (The Tempest) although it's good to see Dialogues des Carmelites there too.

Of course, I won't complain of the fact that we're getting Les Troyens, Giulio Cesare, and Parsifal - and won't complain of Anna Netrebko looking adorable in L'Elisir d'Amore.

I'll make a point of trying to attend all six above - in person if they don't show them in HD.

But it is a season that is kind of unimaginative. Other than the above highlights, the rest is kind of mundane - I mean, great operas for sure, but a lot of beaten path (Francesca da Rimini and Le Comte Ory less so but hardly novelties, and all the others are operas given over and over and over).

28 operas, one more than last season.
