Santa Fe Opera, still red hot in the middle of the current season, has announced next season already.

La Traviata, in honor of the bicentennial of Verdi's birth - directed and designed by Laurent Pelly. Brenda Rae is Violetta; Michael Fabiano is Alfredo. Conductor Frédéric Chaslin.

Rossini's La Donna del Lago with a star-studded cast: Joyce DiDonato, Lawrence Brownlee, René Barbera, and Daniela Barcelona. Stephen Lord conducting.

The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein (a delightful Offenbach operetta) with excellent Susan Graham, Paul Appleby, and Chaslin conducting.

The Marriage of Figaro with Susanna Phillips and Daniel Okulitch; John Nelson conducts.

A world premiere of a new opera co-commissioned by Santa Fe Opera and Opera Company of Philadelphia: Oscar, by Theodore Morrison, on the life of Oscar Wilde. David Daniels sings the title role, with Dwayne Croft as Walt Whitman, and Heidi Stober as Ada Leverson, as well as William Burden as Wilde's friend and biographer Frank Harris. Evan Rogister conducts.

Wagner and Britten Anniversary Concert, honoring the former's 200th anniversary of birth, and the latter's 100th anniversary of birth.

The orchestra will play Stravinsky by recreating a concert that he conducted himself then and there 50 years ago, on the same August 18 of the present concert (which is why the right side of the theater is called "Stravinsky Terrace."

I encourage people to attend; Santa Fe Opera is a darn good company that presents world-quality opera in a stunning setting. Hey, they even have opera tailgating before the shows!

Huh, Aramis, that's standard English in journalistic reports like this. It implies "will be conducting." Like when you say David Daniels sings the title role [implying, he sings it in this production we're talking about - but the performance itself will happen in the future].
John Wilton Nelson, the famous conductor.

Our partners at North Carolina Opera have announced the new season. In celebration of the bicentennial of the birth of both Wagner and Verdi, the season will feature music by both composers.

August 10, 2012 - Concert - "An Evening of Arias" - countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo (recently featured on the cover of Opera News Magazine and on Met in HD with The Enchanted Island) and soprano Rachel Copeland star in a program of arias and duets from Handel and Mozart, with the Brussels Chamber Orchestra. 8 PM, Cary Arts Center in Cary, NC.

January 27, 2013 - Concert - featuring the entire first act of Die Walküre, with Jay Hunter Morris (recently seen as Siegfried in the Met's Ring cycle) in the role of Siegmund, and Elizabeth Bishop as Sieglinde; followed by selections from Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger, and other operas. Timothy Myers conducts. 3 PM, Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh, NC.

May 3 and 5, 2013 - Semi-staged opera - Aïda, Verdi - with Angela Brown in the title role, Issachah Savage as Radames, and Leann Sandeo-Pantaleo (last season's Carmen at NC Opera) as Amneris. Timothy Myers conducts. 8 PM on May 3, Memorial Hall, Chapel Hill, NC; 3 PM on May 5, Meymandi Concert Hall, Raleigh, NC

October 3, 5, and 6, 2013 - Fully staged opera - Così fan tutte, Mozart, with Faith Sherman, Hailey Clark, Tyler Nelson, and Jake Gardner. 8 PM on the 3rd and the 5th, and 3 PM on the 6th, Fletcher Opera Theater, Raleigh, NC

As usual, we'll be providing extensive coverage of these events to support our partners, including interviews with the artists, in-depth articles about the operas, and reviews.

Tickets can be purchased [here] as a season subscription, but single tickets are also available (navigate to other tabs to find them).

More info, photos of the artists, etc., can be found [here]

To all our members and readers in the North Carolina Triangle, don't miss the opportunity to hear up close these bright stars (especially Mr. Costanzo, Ms. Brown, and Mr. Morris who have earned great reviews from their stints on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House) and enjoy love opera, while at the same time supporting our local company.
