Actually, they're underrated... always in the shadow of Led Zeppelin, Cream etc... just like Rory Gallagher himself...

I think a Herheim Meistersinger could be fascinating. I'm still recovering from his Parsifal.

eerm - I quite like Herheim's productions. Sure, he chucks in everything but the kitchen sink, and is a bit over-enamoured of boxes on stage, but they are often thought provoking.

But what makes this news really interesting is the fact that Stefan Herheim will be directing the production. It will be exactly 10 years since Kaufmann's first unhappy experience at this Festival, when he sang Belmonte in a controversial staging by . . . Stefan Herheim. Audiences hated it, and Herheim left the singers to take the brunt of their fury. Things reached a head when one performance was repeatedly interrupted by vociferous booing and Kaufmann got his neck full. He basically told the audience that those who didn't like what was happening on stage were free to leave, after which he was lambasted in the local media for his rudeness. (Of course, nothing was said about the rudeness directed at the musicians by the noisy individuals in the audience.) For several years afterward, he didn't appear in Salzburg again. In some interviews he's given in recent years and in his autobiography, it's pretty clear that he was not happy with the way Herheim had pulled a disappearing act after the second performance and left the singers to fend for themselves. I don't think he's ever worked with Herheim since then. I'm wondering what things will be like when the two encounter each other again, and in Salzburg on top of it. I'm sure Kaufmann will be completely professional, but . . .
    ???
I thought he'll be singing Don Carlo in Salzburg.

I wonder if he could be singing in both productions. (Audiences would love it!) The information about Stolzing came from a recent issue of Opera magazine. I'll need to do some snooping around the Web.

From what I've heard on the Twitter-machine (which, as we know, is always right), Kaufmann was never intended to sing in it. But Michael Volle should be a tremendous Sachs. And I do love Anna Gabler's Eva.

But seriously, what is up with the amazingly boring casting?
