    Robert le diable

The new Laurent Pelly production of Robert le diable at ROH seems jinxed.

    The original cast was
    Bryan Hymel (Robert)
    John Relyea (Bertram)
    Jean-François Borras (Raimbaut)
    Marina Poplavskaya (Alice)
    Diana Damrau (Isabelle)
    Nicolas Courjal (Alberti

Diana Damrau withdrew because she was pregnant & American Jennifer Rowley was brought in to replace her as Isabelle. Then Marina Poplavskaya cancelled owing to illness but then recovered sufficiently to continue with the role of Alice. Three days before opening night it was announced that Jennifer Rowley would be replaced by Patrizia Ciofi and Sofia Fomina. Then the filming had to be re-arranged as on the two performances scheduled for filming there would be different Isabelles. Rumour has it that Pelly is difficult to please but they should have known from the first rehearsal if Jennifer Rowley was unsuitable.

Opening night is tomorrow (Thursday) & I'm going to see it on Sunday.

Official ROH notice. Even the Daily Mail, not usually interested in culture, reported on it.

Well at least I hope our interviewee Bryan Hymel is healthy and makes it. He was pretty excited about it when we had our interview, so I wish him the best. Too bad that he won't be able to be on stage with the big star Diana Damrau which would enhance Bryan's exposure, but he's been getting good roles on his own, his career is going well and I am happy for him.

Wasn't J-Flo supposed to sing Robert in the first place, or have my head been severely misplaced?

He was supposed but he decided not to sing it so quickly that, in fact, he wasn't supposed because nobody even noticed the moment when he was supposed, except people involved in organizing the production and his hamster.

I have to say December is a super-busy month for Ciofi, because she still needs to sing three performances of Lucia in Berlin. That tiny body has a huge power.

Die Harteros just pulled out of the La Scala Lohengrin, and is to be replaced by Anette Dasch.
Hands up everyone that was surprised by this. No one? Good.

I'm not surprised. Did she actually do the opening night? No, it's happening now, am I right? (time differences getting to me a bit)

No, not surprised, just sad. This wonderfully talented singer is going to self-destruct.

Damning review of Robert le diable and I'm seeing it twice

    Aksel was correct

... what a different proposition this could have been if Juan Diego Florez had kept his promise ...

    Don't worry.

First, this guy clearly doesn't like Meyerbeer's music. It happens. Everything is not for everybody.

On the other hand, there are plenty of people who does like Meyerbeer and Robert le Diable, including myself and Loge.

The cast, in my view, has a serious flaw in Mr. Relyea, but then again it's not that bad. Having said that, of course they could have a bad performance, but I would give them the benefit of the doubt.
