Most likely you'll be a much better judge than I could be, even if I were there. I think I can discern good conducting in bel canto, Verdi, Rossini, etc., but would have more trouble with Wagner. Don't underestimate yourself. Regardless of Maestro Barenboim's big name, maybe he was having a time off of sorts and the performance indeed wasn't good. Most likely, if you, an experienced music lover with extensive exposure to Wagner, felt that the performance was "meh" it's because it indeed was "meh."
And actually as an artist, very possibly, the Maestro himself also would have felt it was "meh" too. Often times, artists (including conductors) know when they are being brilliant, and when they are "meh"...

Well, except for the fact that Barenboim did a lot of mugging during his curtain calls - he looked/acted like the whole deal was a lark and that he was really terrific. Typically, artists (except maybe the divas) are all very humble in the face of the audiences accolades, touching their hearts, bowing sincerely/curtsying, etc. Not Barenboim. I wish I had taken a video -

By the way, the fact of having a woman as attractive as Waltraud Meier presented "as an entree" is ... cough cough... interesting.

No, no. Pardon my syntax - it was Irene Theorin that was served up as the entree.

    Oh. Bummer.
Can I order my entree from a different menu, please?
Maybe the brunch menu will have Waltraud Meier? [Alma, hopeful]

Yes, the vision definitely was more Olive Garden than, say, Range...

Can't the small plates be shared? After all, they are small plates--like tapas! I wonder if having a few small plates by myself, I'd still have room for my entree and dessert.

No. No sharing. What do you think Opera Lively Bistro is, a restaurant for pervs?

Hey! I didn't know you had a photo of her... You didn't put it in the printed book of interviews. Didn't you have fire insurance?
