Not to get too picky, but comparing the attendance figures of summer festivals like Glyndebourne and Bayreuth with those of full-length seasons like the Met--isn't that a bit of apples and oranges?

Do you agree or disagree with Maestro Nicholas Braithwaite view that Dido and Aeneas was not "of any value in the world"?

    Braithwaite speaking about Peter Grimes:
'The opera had a huge impact at its premiere in 1945. It was the first British opera of any value in the world and has held its place in the repertoire ever since.

Remember him, remember him, but ah, forget his fate.

Well, I could see someone sticking up their nose at G&S, but Purcell, Purcell!

I think this is ridiculous. Purcell is sublime. But people often stick their noses up at Baroque opera in general, or as here, pretend it simply doesn't exist. Its sounds as though this guy is still stuck in the mentality that opera began in the 19th century.

Met responds to the petition: [clicky]

The Met is proud of its history as a creative base for LGBT singers, conductors, directors, designers, and choreographers. We also stand behind all of our artists, regardless of whether or not they wish to publicly express their personal political opinions. As an institution, the Met deplores the suppression of equal rights here or abroad. But since our mission is artistic, it is not appropriate for our performances to be used by us for political purposes, no matter how noble or right the cause.
