I was reading a sci-fi novel this weekend, Variable Star by Spider Robinson based on a sketch by Robert A. Heinlein that was found by his widow and was never completed by the great master, so Robinson did. It's quite good. The protagonist is a musician, sax player, and the son of a famous physicist. When his late father's ex-colleagues ask him what he does for a living, he replies:

"I'm involved in pneumatic generation of sequences of higher order vibratory harmonics designed to induce auditory maximization of local endorphin production."

I thought it was hilarious and such a reply applies to opera singers too.

I remember one of them complaining that border agents when they see that they hold "extraordinary ability" visas, ask if they are scientists or doctors or something; they might reply the above, LOL.
"J'ai dit qu'il ne suffisait pas d'entendre la musique, mais qu'il fallait encore la voir" (Stravinsky)

But then, I've never really tested very well...

Only 11, but I don't feel bad about the ones I got wrong. In other news, my Munich tickets came! I got everything I wanted, except for a second performance of Forza, so quite happy.

Be careful what you ask for. You are now on the hook for a whole bunch of reviews - and, I, for one, am really looking forward to them!

Here is a link to a promotional video for the Bayerische Staatsoper’s new production of Andrea Chénier featuring interviews with Jonas Kaufmann and conductor Omer Meir Wellber (including English translation). The scenes are from the Staatsoper’s production of La Forza del Destino, not the new Chénier. (You have to scroll nearly to the bottom of the page to find the video.)

14 out of 15--much better than I expected. That last one was the killer.

Juan Diego Flórez gave a recital recently at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. I didn't go but I understand it was brilliant.

Every year JDF's fan club (The Florezidos) hold a dinner near to a venue where he's performing and invite him along. They usually give him a small gift and last time they gave him a Paddington Bear.

He brought the bear with him to the recital and placed it carefully on the piano to watch him perform. In this photo, you can see the bear in his pocket.
