My library often only has one copy of a particular opera.
And guess what, it some cases, it has Bocelli in it. Grrrrr.
And aided and abetted by recording labels and opera houses who are willing to lower their standards to rake in piles of money.
There was a wonderful article several years ago in Opera Now (which I saved and now can't find, of course) which looked at the Bocelli (and Jenkins, Potts, et. al.) phenomenon, and basically described it as a "halfway house" for people who, for one reason or another, won't attend actual opera performances or explore the operatic repertoire.
I need to find that article . . .

I know that there are some Keenlyside's chest-loving women here who might appreciate this photo of Lawrence Brownlee:

I just got back from the 'Il Turco' I mentioned above. It was great and I was laughing out loud throughout!

I have to admit - musically it worked well but I wasnt left with anything particular buzzing my head at the end, unlike Il barbiere for example..
I hope to find time in the next week to write a review.
I tried to book tickets for Billy Budd at the ENO yesterday night. The damn website wouldn't let me pay (yes I know, NZ, home of the scammers) so I fired off an email to ENO, thinking "right, let's wait a few days for them not to reply and then I'll try again".
They got back to me in 10 minutes, telling me to email what seats I wanted and then to ring to confirm. So I did, got a very pleasant efficient man on the other end, he knew who I was, five minutes later I had my seats, C28 and 29 in the dress circle.
Thanks ENO.
Learn from this, ROH.

And here I was expecting another "wardrobe malfunction . . . "![]()
Me too! I think when she started to remove scarfs, everybody thought that this is what would happen. A little disappointing, in that regard...![]()
