And aided and abetted by recording labels and opera houses who are willing to lower their standards to rake in piles of money.

There was a wonderful article several years ago in Opera Now (which I saved and now can't find, of course ) which looked at the Bocelli (and Jenkins, Potts, et. al.) phenomenon, and basically described it as a "halfway house" for people who, for one reason or another, won't attend actual opera performances or explore the operatic repertoire.

    I need to find that article . . .

My library often only has one copy of a particular opera.

And guess what, it some cases, it has Bocelli in it. Grrrrr.

I know that there are some Keenlyside's chest-loving women here who might appreciate this photo of Lawrence Brownlee:

I just got back from the 'Il Turco' I mentioned above. It was great and I was laughing out loud throughout!

    Rossini can be extremely funny.
I love Rossini, as you all know. I think both Il Turco and L'Italiana in Algeri are somewhat under-rated masterpieces (I do like the latter more than the former).

Emiel, please post your review - live performances thread

I have to admit - musically it worked well but I wasnt left with anything particular buzzing my head at the end, unlike Il barbiere for example..

I hope to find time in the next week to write a review.

I tried to book tickets for Billy Budd at the ENO yesterday night. The damn website wouldn't let me pay (yes I know, NZ, home of the scammers) so I fired off an email to ENO, thinking "right, let's wait a few days for them not to reply and then I'll try again".

They got back to me in 10 minutes, telling me to email what seats I wanted and then to ring to confirm. So I did, got a very pleasant efficient man on the other end, he knew who I was, five minutes later I had my seats, C28 and 29 in the dress circle.

    Thanks ENO.

    Learn from this, ROH.

Me too! I think when she started to remove scarfs, everybody thought that this is what would happen. A little disappointing, in that regard...
