Kaufmann fans, feast your eyes on these shots from the film, The Giacomo Variations.

Can't wait for this flick to be released next year.

I'm trying to see Lawrence Brownlee this fall in the Seattle Opera "La Fille du Régiment". Alma probably knows this but I'm just now finding out that Mr. Brownlee is a graduate of the Seattle Opera Young Artist Program. I know he has a place in Opera Lively as an interviewee.

Scanning the cast list, Peter Kazaras will be playing the Duchesse de Krakenthorp, to comic effect.

Can Angela Gheorghiu's voice prolong the life of mice?

Wonder what PETA has to say about this? But perhaps this explains what made her so attractive to Roberto.

Article about issues with the Met's Eugene Onegin. Rehearsal glitches, at least.

I forgot to say that I've got tickets for the Met's Eugene Onegin toward the end of October. It will be interesting to see how it will have settled down by then.

    Why do they do this?

Sing crossover when they come to New Zealand, I mean

Bryn Terfel came here earlier this year. 4 Wagner arias and the rest of the evening was Broadway and crossover. So I didn't go because $160 it works out at $40 an aria, as I'd have left after that.

Now Nathan Gunn is coming to NZ in November. With some dude called Mandy Patinkin. And, yes, you guessed it, we are getting: songs from musicals including The Wizard of Oz, Carousel and West Side Story as well as a sampling of opera, traditional folk, pop and Yiddish tunes.

    grrrrrr.

I'm totally sympathetic, although I have a slightly different problem here.

Several years ago, Juan Diego Florez was to give a recital at the Kennedy Center. I, of course, bought a ticket, though I should have noticed that the recital was to be held in the opera house and not the concert hall.

Sure enough, the place was filled with, well, groupies - 70 year old groupies. I sat down next to an older woman who excitedly asked if I was also a big fan of JDF (which I thought was strange). JDF came out to the orchestra sharing the stage with him, and proceeded to play directly to his audience - mugging at the ladies, rolling his eyes, milking every note - every high C in "Ah Mes Amis". His fans did everything except toss him their underwear. Jeez.
    Never Again.

Visions of voluminous bloomers flying through the air!

But at least you got "Ah mes amis" and not "Memories".

I wonder if it would do any good to express just these thoughts to the concert organizers. Perhaps they would change their programming if they realized that the crossover strategy was costing them attendees instead of increasing the size of their audiences.
