In fact, try singing the song replacing the word "Hallelujah" with "heebee jeebees" . . .

OK, that *does* give me the heebee jeebees.

Well, at least she's got good taste in the matter of crossover, because Leonard Cohen is very good.

That doesn't really help if the woman can't do crossover, though.

True. As a matter of fact, I think Renee is not a very good non-classical singer.
She does opera very well. She shouldn't venture elsewhere.

I'm gonna assume you mean non-*classical* singer.

Cuz . . . I could listen to Renee sing Strauss songs all day long . . .

Yes, that's what I meant, it's been corrected. I have nice recitals with Renee. But her attempts at singing non-classical are no good.

I saw Figaro last night, I was in the very front row of the stalls & had some interesting seat-mates. The couple to my left had brought several small bottles of wine & proceeded to drink these all through the performance. The seat on my right was empty to begin with but the owner arrived after Act1 (there isn't an interval but there is a scene change). She was carrying a sheep-skin rug, six enormous presentation boxes of chocolates & a very large hand bag (purse) which hit me on the side of the head as she settled in her seat. All these were then placed on the floor in front of her & caused inconvenience for people getting to & from their seats at the interval. Don't know why she didn't leave everything in the cloakroom.

At the interval she explained she'd been shopping (really?) & hadn't noticed the time. When I think how much care I take to check & re-check my ticket & get to my seat at least 15 minutes before the start, I have to wonder at some people. I don't think I'd go shopping for anything, never mind sheep-skin rugs before I went to an opera.

Anyway at least she didn't sit slurping wine like the couple the other side.

I wanted to revisit this thread to say I now might appreciate what Renee Fleming is trying to do, singing crossover. I read a very lovely article in today's Seattle Times about her upcoming concert in Seattle.

First, for those of you who keep track of these things, Renee made her Seattle Opera debut in 1990, when they did "Rusalka". Since then she has done well in Seattle.

Renee is the mother of two now teen-aged girls. In fact the girls sang backup for her on one of her recordings. If singing crossover is something Renee can do for her girls (and that generation) then I guess more power to her.

Now, sospiro, I would love to hear more about your time with "Figaro". It sounds like seat mates from some operatic netherworld.

Sorry, Annie, it was my fault. I hired this lady to do what she did, so that when I air conduct during Les Troyens you won't find it too horrible, by comparison. Fortunately for me, the British lady didn't charge me as much as the unwashed vodka-drinking young woman I sent to New Zealand to do the same to Natalie. The sheep-skin rugs were her idea. Nice touch! I'll retain her for other future missions.

You claim to have seen Figaro at nighttime and still dare to complain about other people drinking too much?
