    It's not opera but...

For UK members (or others with access to BBC 2)

    Tonight 23:45 BBC 2

    War Requiem

    DEREK JARMAN (1988)

Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, written in 1962 for the dedication of the new Coventry Cathedral, is visualised as an elongated music video by director Derek Jarman. Laurence Olivier, in his last work on film before his death, plays a disabled veteran Second World War soldier whose memories and reflections accompany the highly acclaimed Britten opus. Newsreel footage of the Great War and atomic explosions are intercut with sequences featuring Owen Teale (as the Unknown Soldier) and Tilda Swinton (a battlefield nurse) looking powerlessly on at all the devastation and wasted lives. Jarman's ultimately inspiring, negative statement on war matches the intense emotions of Britten's music to perfection.

    PLOT SUMMARY

Nathaniel Parker, Tilda Swinton and Laurence Olivier star in Derek Jarman's collage-style visual accompaniment to Benjamin Britten's War Requiem and Wilfred Owen's poems about the horrors of the First World War.

That's my Macbeth! I can recommend it.

Generally, in November, PBS broadcasts the annual Richard Tucker Gala, celebrating outstanding new singers. Ailyn Perez and her husband, Stephen Costello were recent, but separate winners. It's a great evening of opera, with lots of established singers, as well as new talent. I recommend it. 2012 and 13 were excellent and we recorded them to enjoy again.

Nice! I watched it when it was shown in the cinemas. On Opera Lively we have reviews of this production, and an exclusive interview with one of the singers, Paul Appleby in the role of David.

    Here is Paul's interview: [clicky]

And here is my review of the show, with pictures: [clicky]

You are very lucky. I get 2 PBS channels and neither one shows operas from Great Performances or Live From Lincoln Center. A couple of years ago, 1 channel did show the Netrebko La Boheme movie. I do get to see all the Live in HD from the Met in a very nice theater that is 10 minutes from home so not having PBS broadcast them isn't so bad anymore.
I still get on 'rants' about this. It is the principle, they are available but these channels rather show Georgia Outdoors etc.

For those members in the UK or who otherwise have access to the beeb

Sunday 18 December BBC 4 is showing this year's The Barber of Seville from 20:00hrs. There is an introduction and a look behind the scenes starting an hour earlier at 19:00hrs with Danielle de Niese.

I'm on Indian time so it will be in the middle of the night for me and am pressing record on the recorder machine that doesn't use tape.

There also follows a broadcast 28th December, "Jonas Kaufmann: Tenor For The Ages" at 10:20pm. I recommend this for all, whether or not you are a JK fan.
