Legendary Italian countertenors

Aforelli (? - circa. 783)

The most legendary of all Italian countertenors. First sources referring to his legend date back to 821 but the first complete version of it is by Lefferini, XIIth century minstrel from today's Tuscany. The legend says that Aforelli was so proud of his voice that he refused to sing to anybody but most powerful kings and their courtiers. One day he was travelling and on his way he stumbled upon a recent battlefield with many fallen knight still breathing. As he was crossing the battlefield, one of lying knights opened his eyes and said: "Thy face is know to me... Aforelli are you , sing thus and comfort me in my death...". But Aforelli replied: "Who are you thus, lying in you own blood and still so proud to ask the grace of hearing my voice... to fallen knights I shall not sing for there is no glory for the fallen ones, and for glorious only is the splendour of my voice...". And the wounded knight gave his last sigh in these words: "thus I curse you, reptile, for there is no glory in the vain ones, and for glorious only should be splendour of such gift... Ranachevole IV(*) is thus my name!" and the lightning stroke under Aforelli's feet as he discovered his voice is no more...
