Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld was the creator of the role of Tristan. He was selected by Wagner himself, that was pleased with some the tenor's singing several scenes in private rehearsals. Also the fact that he was a Munich native helped to further his case. However, after just four performances, the young von Carolsfeld (he was only 29 years old), died from a stroke.

His Isolde was also her wife, the Danish soprano (of mixed Brazilian-French origin) Malvina Garrigues. She was devastated at the loss of his husband, that was her junior by ten years, and never sang professionally again.

For this, perhaps my most beloved opera, I will choose:

    Norma - Maria Callas
    Pollione - Carlo Bergonzi
    Adalgisa - Montserrat Caballe
    Oroveso - Tancredi Pasero

and for a performance in 2012:

    Norma - Dimitra Theodossiou
    Pollione - Gregory Kunde
    Adalgisa - Carmela Remigio
    Oroveso - Ildar Adbrazakov

    Adalgisa - Anna Moffo
    Oroveso - Tito Gobbi

    Current Norma cast:

Norma - Netrebko (a stretch but she did well with Anna Bolena, Puritani)
    Pollione - JDF
Adalgisa - Garanca (or AC Antonacci)
    Oroveso - Rugero Raimondi

An extraordinary case, for sure. A singer who married her own creation of stage character of same sex. And all of this in XIXth century.

English is difficult. Some people struggle with pronouns. Some people struggle with articles.
