"ICA Classics to release a new DVD in commemoration of Tito Gobbi’s 100th Anniversary

In association with the Associazione Musicale Tito Gobbi, ICA Classics proudly presents this new Tito Gobbi DVD release in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Featuring Tito Gobbi in excerpts from Rigoletto, Gianni Schicchi and his signature role, Scarpia in Tosca, this exciting DVD features selections from the original Great Characters in Opera television series produced for the BBC by Patricia Foy in 1965-66. These exceptional interpretations are being made available on DVD for the first time and show the legendary baritone at the height of his career when he was in demand internationally and in particular at London’s Covent Garden.

These films display Tito Gobbi’s deep understanding of each role he undertook, immersing himself totally in the characters, the history and traditions of the period - in fact going so far as to sketch positions and movements as he imagined the soul of each individual. These rare sketches feature in the booklet of the Gobbi DVD, together with the note written by this daughter, Cecilia Gobbi, who is also President of Associazione Musicale Tito Gobbi, which is available in English and in Italian. This DVD provides an exceptional account of this remarkable singer and actor’s portrayal of three major operatic roles that featured continuously throughout his distinguished career.
