-----------

Our community has voted for our most recommended or favorite operas, by order of preference. It doesn't mean that we pretend to know what operas are "best" given that this is subjective and the body of operatic pieces is so huge that nobody is equipped to fully compare all of them (numbers are floated around in various sources attesting to the fact that 40,000 to 50,000 operas have been penned so far). Therefore, all that a community like ours can say, is what operas we love most.

Furthermore, given that the number of members who are willing to participate in the voting process is but a sub-set of our membership body, certain operas might have made it into the list thanks to a few members liking them, while in other lists based on expert opinion rather than on "likes" these operas might not be ranked as prominently. That's perfectly fine, exactly because our list is not based on expert opinion but rather on individual tastes, pulled collectively. So, there is no right or wrong. One can't say "it's absurd that opera X was ranked so high." Well, it's not absurd: it stems from the fact that enough Opera Lively voting members like that opera, therefore it is there for this very good reason. The list is what it is: a list of "favorites" established by a specific community; not a list of "best" or "most popular worldwide" or "most historically important" or "most recognized by experts" - readers can find such lists elsewhere. Our list, here, is just what we love.

What is the utility of such a list, given that there are many similar lists online built with various criteria? Well, first of all, we made the list because we had fun doing it. That's a good enough reason. Second, it does have a limited utility for someone approaching the operatic field and trying to figure out what operas to see next. It's a way to recommend certain works to our readers.

The vote took place here: [clicky (http://operalively.com/forums/showthread.php/1940-The-Opera-Lively-list-of-most-recommended-operas)]

This thread you are reading right now, on the other hand, is for the results only, that is, it lists the winners in the proper order, once they were established. This thread is "closed" and therefore is not for posting comments (a "closed" thread can only be edited by staff members). The above thread that can be accessed by the link provided, however, will remain open for comments.

Those that did not qualify in the top 100, but were also nominated, by order:

87 more operas were nominated but didn't make the 1-100 list. We don't think it is worth breaking the ties on this list, since it all becomes too insignificant in terms of differences, and just a general indication since a hierarchy was given to operas recommended in earlier rounds, but many of these only made it thanks to one Opera Lively member so they can't be seen as a true community recommendation; they are indeed "also run" operas, but at least they were remembered, and listing them here is both a recognition of their value, and a "thank you" to our members who recommended them.
