For some reason, this doesn't get cued up very often:
10371
I remember well the only time I've seen the Brandenburg Concertos performed live. I was still living with my parents in Rochester, NY (around 1974, a year or so before moving to DC) and I spotted a notice in the newspaper that the Concertos were to be performed by Eastman School of Music students in a theater on the University of Rochester campus.
I decided to go - my folks weren't interested - (so started my practice of attending live performances by myself) but thought that classical music wouldn't be much of a draw, so wasn't in much of a hurry to get to the theater. That proved to be an incorrect assessment - the small theater was packed, but I was lucky to get a good center standing room spot where I was able to lean on a low wall. Thus, the lesson learned about making judgements about peoples' artistic tastes in a smaller community - when that community is very highly educated.
The Concertos were presented out of sequence - rather than starting with Concerto #1 and working their way through the set, they started with the Concerto requiring the fewest instruments and proceeded in order of next largest number of instruments, adding and subtracting as they went along. It was the first classical concert I saw in the U.S., and I was dazzled.

Here to share one of the most obscure pieces that is a favorite on my CD shelf. Many years ago I went on a violin concerto kick and I tried to track down every recorded violin concerto composed between ~1870-1970. My absolute favorite discovery of this project was the 1932 concerto by Gian Francesco Malipiero.
This is the only modern recording ('70s, I'd guess) that I know of, by violinist Andre Gertler:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zIZL1rwrCM
I took to it immediately for its combination of lyricism and spiky rhythms and harmonies; I would compare it to Samuel Barber's concerto (another of my all-time favorite pieces of music). I knew almost immediately that I loved it; it is very much like the music "in my head".
As for why Malipiero is not well-known, there are several probable factors. 1. Italian music for the symphony hall has never had the same international clout as German music, perhaps because they dominated opera for so long. 2. Malipiero's most important period was the 1920s-1930s so he's really been over-shadowed by a long list of incredible composers like Bartok and Stravinsky. 3. He doesn't really belong to a "school" (or "brand") of music like Berg (12-Tone) or Poulenc (Les Six). His most important formal trait was that he rejected having one. His music is always very rhapsodic, unstructured and song-like.
This could explain why violinists might not want to champion the piece. They might feel there are "flaws" to the piece that they would have to apologize for, when analyzing it according to formal structures. The best example lies in this work's totally unique - and surprisingly unshowy - finale. It starts at 11:55 (https://youtu.be/6zIZL1rwrCM?t=11m55s) in the above video. The orchestra introduces the finale... for a full two minutes (!!) until the violin interrupts impatiently. The violin then plays on it's own for FOUR MINUTES (from 14:08 to 18:06 (https://youtu.be/6zIZL1rwrCM?t=18m6s)). It's partly a cadenza, but it's also the bulk of the development of the whole movement. I think it's striking and beautiful to have the dialogue of a concerto totally break down like this. When the orchestra finally creeps back in calmly there's a feeling of relief like you were holding your breath the whole time. The two reconcile in a pseudo-2nd slow movement.
The expected display of virtuosic fireworks at the end of the concerto lasts a mere 45 seconds, but boy do I love them. Malipiero races towards the final cadence from an unexpected angle - like Prokofiev often did - so that you hardly realize you're at the end until it's already happened!

On the picture box
The national broadcaster here is quite good showing concerts almost daily.
1979 Leonard Bernstein Beethoven 9th symphony
Wien
Kurt Moll, Rene Kollo, Gwyneth Jones and some else, sorry, forgot.
Super HD shows a very dramatic Bernstein with furious punches and beautiful facial expressions. Sweat dripping from his face with each movement it looked exciting and of course the orchestra and singers responded accordingly. Sadly, I could not have the volume as I would have liked; the wife's reading time and the newborn downstairs does not permit. I need my own music room. I also want a 8k tee vee.

Comment from concertmeister (also forgot the name here) "musicians read music but Bernstein sees the score and can also feel, taste and smell the music..."

He must have had Synesthesia (https://www.healthline.com/health/synesthesia): "Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which information meant to stimulate one of your senses stimulates several of your senses." According to my daughter (who has Synestheia--son does too), she and her brother can watch a movie and then later replay it in their heads in vivid imagery from the movie. My daughter writes books and has the whole story laid out in her head and can move things around. She sees some things, like days of the week, as colors. It is a really freaky thing. If I tell them some creepy thing, like how the doctor had to poke a hole in my eyeball to remove the cataract lens and insert a plastic replacement lens, they say they can feel it. I would think this condition could drive one crazy, but they seem happy with it. I will say, they would be good ones to give the police a description of a suspect. Me, no good (...he was tall, long hair, dark jacket, i think he had grey pants, a little bit heavy, but I am not sure...)

Mostly non-vocal (symphonies 1-12 and 15). All good and the vocal (13 & 14) are quite interesting.
