• Great Expectations for Fidelio at Opera Carolina

Dear readers, this is to remind everybody who is at driving distance from Charlotte, North Carolina, that the excellent company Opera Carolina is opening this weekend their new production of Beethoven's thrilling masterpiece Fidelio. It is not every day that we see such a compelling work done by a regional company, so it is definitely worth the trip!

Fidelio will run on Saturday October 17 at 8 PM, Thursday October 22 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday October 25 at 2 PM, at the Blumenthal Performance Arts Center, in German, with English supertitles. Tickets can be purchased by clicking [here] or over the phone at 704.372.1000 and range from $19 to $150.

Opera Lively has interviewed five of the artists, and their answers are very compelling. The first interview, with Andrew Funk (Rocco) can be consulted by cliking [here]. The second one, with Maria Katzarava (Leonore) is [here]. The third one is with Xu Lei in the role of Marzelline, and it is [here]. Ever since the singer had to be replaced due to a visa snafu, but her answers do shed light on the character. Andrew Richards in the role of Floristan is the fourth one, over [here]. Finally, Kyle Pfortmiller's answers (Pizarro) are [here].

We've seen most of the singers in other productions and they are fabulous. We have great expectations for this show which is not to be missed - stay tuned for our review on Sunday.

The music in Fidelio has the grandiosity of Beethoven's symphonies (the final apotheosis has been compared to the end of his 9th Symphony) and it features a famous overture, intriguing characters, and beautiful arias and choruses. On the podium we will have Maestro Meena's secure conducting (as usual, he conducts from memory, being able to remember the entire score without consulting a print copy).

This new production updates the opera to the events surrounding the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Pictures from the Dress Rehearsal have been kindly forwarded to Opera Lively today, by Opera Carolina's Marketing Department. They are credited to Jon Silla. Here they are:

Pizzaro, Kyle Pfortmiller - first scene and aria

Fidelio (Leonore, Maria Katzarava) reunited with her husband (Florestan, Andrew Richards)

Final scene when the truth of the held prisoners is revealed

Leonore (Maria Katzarava) reinforces her determination to save her husband

Final scene when Leonore (Maria Katzarava) is acknowledged by the crowd for her heroism (Opera Carolina Chorus)

      Florestan -
It looks fascinating and, even though I am not a fan of modernized Fidelios, I get the impression that this is going to be a very good Fidelio.
