• The Brevard Music Center / Janiec Opera Company in North Carolina - Auditions

The Brevard Music Center is a traditional summer institute and festival in Brevard, North Carolina. Opera Lively is happy to publish this announcement to help with diffusion of their opera program, and student recruitment.

The Music Center is situated on a wooded 180-acre campus in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Founded in 1936, the Music Center has matured into one of this country's premier summer training programs and festivals. More than 400 gifted students, ages 14 through post-college, come to the Music Center to study with members of a distinguished artist faculty and with renowned guest artists. For seven weeks, students participate in a vigorous program of instruction that includes ensembles, private lessons, and chamber music.

Brevard's hallmark is the powerful sense of community that re-emerges every June, as faculty and students work together to present more than 80 concerts to the public. The total audience each summer numbers more than 30,000.

The Center has a strong opera program. This is its website: click [here]

Each summer the opera program at the Brevard Music Center enrolls approximately 30 singers who, together, constitute the Janiec Opera Company. In 2012 the median age of students in the program was 22.

    • All roles are sung by students. There may be double casting for some roles.
    • All productions are fully staged.
    • All productions utilize professional directors, designers, costumers, etc.
    • All mainstage productions (three of the four shows in 2013) are presented with orchestra.

    -----------

New for 2013, the Brevard Music Center is creating a new opera composer series entitled Opera In A Box. Each summer, a composer and librettist will bring their work-in-progress to the Brevard Music Center. Opera students will have the opportunity to help them achieve their vision. Sections of the opera will be staged and performed in the Morrison Playhouse, a state-of-the-art black box theater. The new work will be narrated by the creators and the stage director, guiding the audience through the creative process of developing a new work. Join the Brevard Music Center as it helps create opera for the 21st century.

This season, composer/librettist Michael Ching has been chosen to present his new work Speed Dating Tonight! created in partnership with Dean Anthony.
