Ego te absolvo
I have it and the absence of dialogue in no way detracts from the marvelous singing and conducting.
Mirella Freni died yesterday at age 84. A tremendous singer, who I saw on a few occasions back in the day, had a long career in keeping with that rich sound.
Marcello Giordani, age 56, passed on Saturday of a heart attack at his home in Sicily. He sang 241 performances at the Met.
This week, I had the pleasure of watching TWO (count 'em, TWO) versions of Verdi's Attila.
The first was La Scala's season opener with Abdrazakov. When I saw it (twice!) I thought it the best I...
I saw Scotto perform Juliette with Corelli as Romeo. Aside from the obvious issue with blatantly non-idiomatic French pronunciation, it was a well done performance overall. Or maybe because it was my...
I like this opera and find the Blu ray with Villazon and Machaidze to be excellent, despite the lack of accurate French diction. The twoactually convey an impression of teen agers.
Presto Classical notes a June 14 release of Mercadante's Didone Abbandonata. I have a couple of CD operas by Mercadante so this will be my first chance to see one performed.
You're not alone.
2 recent Blu ray releases are interesting. Dynamic's I Lombardi, with Alex Esposito and Angel Meade is quite well done and disc quality in Blu ray continues to amaze.
Less well staged (in fact,...
Dynamic's newsletter shows a May release of Donizetti's Il Castello di Kenilworth in Blu ray and CD formats. The Donizetti Festival performance features Jessica Pratt, Carmella Remigio and Stefan...
Florex is also a pretty decent actor. I saw him is a production of Tales of Hoffman where he did a commendable job dramatically and vocally. He is scheduled for Traviata at the Met with Damrau, if...
May I suggest that the version with Florez and Dessay is very, very good.
The Met's Norma (Radvanovsky, DiDonato, Calleja) will be out in early November (Amazon US)
I like most Met DVDs, some better than others. I particularly like the Donizetti "Three Queens" trilogy and find them well cast and produced, as well as superb visual and auditory experiences in Blu...
HA! The girls I know prefer lobster and an expensive wine.
But on topic, I just ordered the forthcoming La Favorite and Giovanna D'Arco from Presto Classical to celebrate my forthcoming birthday,...
I just received and watched (twice) the recent Nabucco from Bel Air Classiques. It was filmed in the Arena di Verona and is quite good. Timewise, it is staged during the 1848 national movement in...
There is a recent issue with Netrebko which is musically excellent and there is a forthcoming version due in September (with a different cast, obviously).
There is a psychiatrist on this site who might be able to explain this fixation. Unfortunately, he is the chief obssessor.
With a significant birthday approaching, I am looking at hitting up Presto Classical for the upcoming La Favorite, Giovanna D"Arco and the ROH's Boheme (like I need another Boheme!)
I dumped my copy, as well. But as far as Trovatore on DVD, the Met version is my current favorite. Radvanovsky isn't quite as good as Netrebko's later Met performance (which is a master class in...
I like the Met Pasquale with Netrebko and Polenzani. Levine conducts. In Blu ray it is quite an experience. The Late John Del Carlo is most enjoyable.
This is a well staged and superbly sung Land of Smiles. It is abridged with most of the spoken dialogue removed. The Seefestspiele Morbisch version is complete, but this one is better sung.
I do not think that Adina stays with Nemorino for very long. Bumpkins and rich girls aren't like blondes and wealthy old guys.
I received and played the new Giovanna d'Arco yesterday. Vocally it is first rate. Dramatically it treats Giovanna as mentally ill, experiencing sdelusions. With that focus, there are many...
