    Jonas Kaufmann news

Not sure if this is the right place...mods please move to correct spot if necessary! (PS widget was not working for me this morning--the interview appeared as a long narrow column on right-hand side of screen)

    Here's my comment:

In all previous interviews Kaufmann has said Otello is a goal in the distant future. For him to say in "two or three years" has really set my mind speculating! If it is at a major house, planned 5 years in advance, that means it is already on someone's schedule!

Unless it is at La Scala which (from what I've read) does not plan that far ahead. He is buds with Barenboim and we know will be opening the season there next year with Lohengrin.

Would La Scala dare to produce Otello with a German Otello? Even one as (apparently) well beloved there as Jonas?

It would be quite a coup for them, wouldn't it? You'd think they'd jump at the chance to produce Kaufmann's first Otello.

I was working on the widgets. During the construction work they acquired several different shapes while we played with the features. It's back to a decent format now.

I set permissions to allow comments, I haven't figured out yet why it's not happening. There seems to be no field to enter the comments, which puzzles me. I'll ask vBulletin tech support about it.

On a somewhat related subject, I wonder whatever happened with the recording of Aida that Kaufmann is supposed to be making with Gheorghiu and Pappano. She mentioned it in an interview with an opera magazine a couple of years ago . . . and there's been nothing about it since.

Can I ask whether Jonas mentioned about doing Tristan?? He did so in the About The House magazine a year ago and seemed more steadfast about doing that than Otello as he was scared about being typecast as Otello (although I couldn't see why).

And what's about Adriana Lecouvreur and Königskinder which supposed to come out in January? They suddenly dissapeared from DECCA website ...

I think I read on his fan site that the release may have been postponed.
by the way, the site is a great and very much up to date about JK's whereabouts

I wish she were. I had heard the same rumor and checked Decca's web site. No sign of either video. Talk about a grinch stealing Christmas.

On the other hand, I read speculation (probably on that same site) that Decca are holding out for more tv sales in Japan and Europe. Unlike the benighted US there is a market for selling these opera performances for broadcast and I guess they are waiting to see if they can earn some more money that way before releasing the DVDs. I live in hope!

The Don Giovanni film with Christopher Maltman has also disappeared from Presto Classical; it WAS due on 3 January. Honestly it's enough to make you turn to piracy.

    No, Alma, she said "piracy."

    That would be, "Arrrrrrgh!"
