Plácido Domingo conducting the anniversary Don Giovanni in Prague

For the 230th anniversary of Don Giovanni's premiere in Prague Plácido Domingo brought it back to the place it had been performed for the first time: the Ständetheater in Prague. It is not only one of the most charming theaters of the Rococo, but also the only surviving theatre in which Mozart himself has given performances.

    Cast:

    Don Giovianni Simone Alberghini
    Leporello Adrian Sampetrean
    Donna Anna Irina Lungu
    Donna Elvira Katherina Knezikova
    Zerlina Julia Novikova

Rossini's Ermione from Tyrolean Festival Erl

Rossini's forgotten opera dissapeared from the scene for 160 years, before it had been again performed in 1987. Rossini himself called Ermione "my small, italian William Tell" and said how it will "come back to the daylight after my death".

Austrian TV ORF was showing this year performance from the Tyrolean Festival Erl, as a shortened version for the television in the form of opera movie directed by Felix Breisach. Chorus and Orchestra of the Tyrolean Festival Erl were conducted by Gustav Kuhn.

    Cast:

    Maria Radoeva - "Ermione",
    Ferdinand von Bothmer - "Pirro",
    Hui Jin - "Pilade",
    Iurie Ciobanu - "Oreste",
    Svetlana Kotina - "Andromaca",
    Giovanni Battista Parodi - "Fenicio",
    Giorgio Valenta - "Attalo"

So Arte.tv is presenting many of their online streaming operas with English subtitles this season. Am I crazy, or is this completely new for them? I was pretty sure they’ve only ever presented with French & German subtitles, or none at all.

I think Arte.tv saw that their former partner The Opera Platform had much greater streaming numbers on videos that were subtitled over un-subtitled, and decided to do the same thing.

I’m ecstatic looking at the schedule for the season so far (I have no doubt more will be added in the spring).

Edit: And the actual landing page for the season is here:
