Mariinsky II Grand Opening on 2 May

Just noticed that Mariinsky Theater's opening gala concert will be broadcast tonight at 20:00 (Moscow time). Netrebko, Borodina, Domingo... It so happens that Maestro Gergiev celebrates his sixtieth birthday at the same time! Can be watched over the internet at mariinsky.tv.

Indeed. Today's New York Times has a piece on the Mariinsky II on the front page of the Arts section, detailing the 10 years of construction, controversies with four different architects, Gergiev's take on it, and the announcement of the first few operas. Iolanta will be the first one, featuring Anna Netrebko. The Russian Rusalka (by Alexander Dargomyzhsky) will be the third one, and in-between, the world premiere of a new work, The Left-Handed by Rodion Shchedrin based on a Russian 19th century novel by Nikolai Leskov.

There is a slide show on nytimes.com/music

It's the first new opera house in Russia in decades, and I take it as a sign of vitality of the art form.

Darn, Moscow 8 PM (Same in Saint Petersburg) is in 50 minutes, 12 noon in the US (East Coast). I won't be able to see it, will be flying back home soon from NYC.

    Some pictures from the gala

Unfortunately it occurred to me a bit late that I could take some screenshots of the gala. Even then I managed to lose my picture of Anna as Lady Macbeth! Anna as Zerlina with all the male soloists singing LÓ ci darem with her.

Well, Trebs singing Lady Macbeth was simply ASTOUNDING, and I'm really looking forward to hearing her in the full role next year.

Hey, you keep making comments like this one, and I'll have to forgive you for bashing the Met!

Well, she really was incredible! Tempo was a bit sluggish and the faster runs weren't maybe as clear as one would have liked them, but WOW, that woman can sing (as if we didn't know that from earlier)! The drama of it all! The DRAMA!

She doesn't need a lot of effort to work on me. Just showing up is enough.

This said, wow, this La ci darem la mano was so enjoyable! I loved the surprise from the pit (won't spoil it, for those who haven't seen the video yet).
