Today's visit to the Little Shop: a highly regarded recording. Well, OK . . . I just liked the picture.

Woo hoo! After months of my online friend sifting through his classical CD collection and sending me lists of what he's offering at garage-sale prices, I've finally submitted my request for Part 2 of the Big Haul. This order will be significantly larger and more adventurous than the last one, so like last time I'll post just a few items each day. To begin, then: Merry Christmas!

Yes, I know the Gould is instrumental, but these are the only Bach CDs I ordered this time, so I'm throwing them all together here. Report me if you must.

Conductor/orchestra: Sir Thomas Beecham, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Soloists: Jennifer Vyvyan, Monica Sinclair, Jon Vickers, Giorgio Tozzi

I swear this is my last Messiah purchase -- but for $10.50 (including tax), why not? From listening to YouTube clips, I know I'll like it: a straightforward, un-embellished, historically uninformed performance in which the bass, not the contralto, sings the aria, "But who may abide the day of his coming." Although I ordered this from Amazon, it won't arrive until sometime in October, but I'll definitely have it before December.

Amfortas will join the club once he has swapped premises with his local music store.

My last Messiah purchase was the Solti set. I think I am done, but then ...
