Interesting group of soloists in that Messiah. Please let us know what you think of it.

Well, I have mixed feelings. Sometimes it sounds quite good and other times a bit strange. I did some comparisons on the four soloists and a choral part with my favorite Messiah, and Solti remains my favorite. I am glad I only paid 8 dollars for the Wilberg set. Perhaps I will warm up to it over time. Interestingly, it is highly rated on Amazon at 4.6 out of 5 stars on 55 reviews. Messiah Guide rates it highly too at 8 out of 10 but the rater is biased as "a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir [who] participated in the making of this album."
Possibly part of the problem is what is explained in the booklet regarding this recording:
Using Handel's original orchestration of strings, oboes, and trumpets as a foundation, Wilberg has retained only the woodwind and brass parts from Mozart's and Prout's editions that are consistent with Handel's compositional and timbrel choices. He has refined the rhythms, phrasing, and articulations of the vocal and orchestral parts to reflect the 18th-century principals of clarity and definition...

I'm wondering what condition Villazón’s voice is in nowadays. I'm assuming this recording was made fairly recently.
The recording is May 2014. I just listened several more times in the last couple days. I don't think there is anything wrong with Villazon's voice (though I am hardly qualified to judge that), it's just that he sounds strange singing an oratorio instead of opera. Terfel sounds the best to me, then the ladies are pretty good. Mumford's voice sometimes seems to have a steely edge, but otherwise sounds fine. Maybe the ladies just sing it in more of an operatic style? I don't have the musical background or ear to really say what is going on but overall it is a fine recording and for what I paid ($8 shipped), I have no regrets. It probably won't be on my main MP3 player but I'll give it a spin every now and then.
