^^^ I took a course on the Beethoven sonatas a couple of years ago; the instructor touted the Barenboim and the Alfred Brendel as her favorite sets.

Half price day at library sale ($1 each):

    Beethoven's 8th and 9th, Michael Tilson Thomas
    Beethoven's 5th and 6th Norrington
    Beethoven's 5th and 6th Karajan ('84)
Mahler 5 BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra, Tadaaki Otaka
    Beethoven Symphony 9, Barenboim
Favorite Soprano Arias--Luba Orgonasova (of my favorite La Sonnambula)
Daugherty's Metropolis Symphony, Zinman. The booklet says the Metropolis Symphony is bizarro, and from what little I sampled, it is. But I like it!

Also, there is something beautiful about a singly disk with Beethoven's 5th and 6th together on it. If I could only have one disk of Beethoven symphonies, this probably would be it (would be a stuggle between this and a Ninth though).
"Ah,non credea mirarti si presto estinto, o fiore." --Bellini, La Sonnambula (also written on his tomb).
