Last night we watched the DVD of the Met's Carmen with Garanca and Alagna. Alagna may not be the best Don Jose I have seen, but Garanca was an amazing Carmen!
This is one of those buy! buy! buy! DVDs - the lovely Stéphanie D'Oustrac carries L'heure espagnole, and it's pretty good, but L'enfant et les sortilèges is one of the most enchanting productions I have ever seen. If we want to get kids into opera, we should petition to have it shown in all schools as part of the music syllabus.
And this is so much better than the previous version I saw (from Salzburg), which was just a concert performance masquerading as a staged version.

Alanga is well past his sell bye date
Last night it was La Boheme with Netrebko, Beczala and Machaidze.. It's one of the best sung Bohemes in my experience, but the staging is terrible.

The subjective differences between folks who like different things is what makes for interesting, hopefully reasoned discourse.
Try the Decca Freni / Pavarotti CD.
Or watch the DVD they mad several years later.
I saw this at the theater a couple of years ago. Garanca was amazing, Alagna not so amazing. This March the Met has 2 performances of Carmen with Garanca and Kaufmann. I wish that is the one they were broad casting.

I cant stop watching this, those two voices Kaufmann and Koch are so well matched .
This may be off topic, but after two days of hosting food and wine events at a restaurant owned by good friends, but at some distance from home, I just needed to sit and immerse myself in "Celebracion!" with Maestro Dudamel and Juan Diego Florez. I had this on my unwatched pile for quite a while, and it was a fantastic evening. I thought at first that Dudamel needed to go back to school when he conducted the overture to La Gazza Ladra like a Brahms piece, but once JDF started singing, it was paradise!
If you do like Strauss and Fleming (I do) then this is heaven
