Yes, Zambello's production really captures the sweep of Prokofiev's massive opera. Every time I hear that final chorus, I want to kiss the ground of Mother Russia!

It's so good, it's coming with me to that desert island. Whilst I'm stranded, I'm watching the ball and fantasizing where I want to be (and maybe also wearing one of those frocks)

Even from when Field Marshall Kutuzov in scene 10 When was this dreadful business decided... (maybe better than the Bolshoi/Ermler recording with Vedernikov)

and otherwise anytime Olga Guryakova sings, I want to kiss Natasha!

Good. You distract her and then maybe I'll have a chance with Prince Andrei.

Come visit me in Champaign, and we'll go meet Nathan Gunn. He teaches voice here at the University of Illinois.

Those Russians! But, maybe time to give W&P another go. I saw it done a number of years ago when Gergiev brought the Mariinsky to Washington, and thought it wildly over the top. So unlike the restraint of Wagner's subtle hand in composition.

I hesitate to admit this is one (of many...) operas I've never heard - I don't know it at all.
