Britten: Turn of the Screw. Terrific performance of the Governess! I am not as fond of this opera as other chamber operas by Britten because of the interpretation of James' novella, however I am probably just prejudiced about adaptations because of my own interpretation of the original story. Great opera though. The stagecraft, sets etc of this production is brilliant.

Descent performance by Damrau , the weakest link : the tenor, but overall 8+

There are many parts to this production that are very effective and Netrebko gives a very good performance.

Clearly this is a much better production than the CIT Productions* version and made the whole opera so much more enjoyable.
*Clayton's Imagination Theatre Productions, normally quite good but not in this case
I've been watching a fairly bizarre staging of Handel's Alcina, but I'm enjoying it a lot. So far I've only watched the first half hour, I'll get to it again tomorrow afternoon.......

Okay if I was going to be brutally honest, I'll throw the play-do and the sweets out the window. Oh and the costume department.
Dad is good and the brother, except the death scene (I'll chuck the stage director out the window too) and the father.
Just arrived in yesterday's mail. I got it for Waltraud Meier, who oddly does note even show up on the cover. Have watched the first 49 minutes and am liking it very much. Ildikó Raimondi (Marzelline), featured on this cover, has a very good voice.

Last night, I enjoyed Maria Stuarda. This was the version on Art Haus, with Anna Caterina Antonacci as Elizabeth, and Mariella Devia in the title role. It is a 2008 recording from La Scala, and is, in my opinion, the best currently available on DVD. Antonacci is ...formidable in this role, and while Devia was around 60 when this was recorded, her age did not affect her singing. This version is complete, and includes the seldom done overture. Splendid in all respects!!
