La Scala have a winner with this traditional but not dull I Due Foscari. I am not usually a fan of BariDomingo but he is fantastic in this age-appropriate role, with strong support from Francesco Meli and Anna Pirozzi. I Due Foscari is probably my favourite early Verdi as much for the plot as the music. I cried.
Beware though. Frequent interruptions from the over made-up German presenter spouting inanity.

Nice review, but they must have switched off some of the singers for the DVD because the DVD does not have Ewa Podles or Kiri te Kanawa. I do have Ewa Podles (and she is great) in this La Fille du Regiment (my first and favorite).

Last night we watched a performance from the Vienna Volksoper of Emmerich Kalman's Die Herzogin von Chicago, a late work from 1928. It mixes Viennese music with Jazz. The plot involves a rich Chicago chick who likes Jazz, with the (required) suave European aristocrat, who likes (you guessed it!) traditional Viennese and Gypsy music. I am reserving judgment until I get a second viewing. One does not expect high drama from operetta, but "she who must be obeyed" found it charming. So I'll opine after a second time through it.
Sutherland and Pavarotti in Maria Stuarda are great, but a special surprise is that
Elizabeth is sung by the wonderful contralto, Huguette Tourangeau
With a surprise ending added to it:
Elizabeth is shown gloating over being rid of Mary. Then she requests,
"Show the Earl of Leicester in." The servant replies,
"His Lordship sends his apologies. He has taken a ship to France."

I hate ironing with a passion you WOULD NOT BELIEVE!!! It's tedious, it makes my back ache and worst of all it has to be done over and over again. These sheets I've been ironing only have to used and washed and then I have to iron them again!!!
Anyway to ease the pain I've been watching this. Ages since I watched it and it really is good.
