I think Perer Mattei is pretty terrific too. (Sorry for late reply due to Fall)
I want that so much - and I don't even have a DVD player. Anything with JK and AH!
Saw that on Yt production not too elegies, Stemme good except for costume, KAuffmann terrific and aware of his sex appeal.

Well, after Jonas KAufmann, I may well agree with you.q
Why are two posts combined?
Christopher Maltman seems to be such a nice man. He was either a judge or a guest commentator on the Cardiff Singing competition last year and had very kind words but intelligent analysis for all the contestants.
Not just a pretty voice.

Last night we watched the new Don Carlo with Der Jonas and Anja Harteros. I am not much of a Kaufmann fan, finding him too baritonal, but, ma foi!! He sang the whatever out of the score. Harteros and Hampson were also fine, and Pappano got more from the score than I have noticed in other versions. I still prefer Furlanetto as Fillipo, but overall, this is one fine recording!
The production gets heavily into the concept that Manon becomes some kind of soft porn star rather than just Geronte's mistress. In act 2 the mezzo "singer" initiates some girl on girl action, and the "dance master" is filming it. It's certainly distracting and rather alienating. Opolais gives a committed performance, but to be honest I don't like her voice - there's a harsh dimension to it. If I were recommending a DVD I'd stick to the old Scotto/Domingo one - it's more convincing.
Let's face it, I bought this entirely for der Jonas.
