After listening to this disappointing concert with Anna and her husband Yusif, I can't help but think that the real star here is Anna, and Yusif, not of the same order of magnitude, is only featured on the same stage with her for extra-artistic reasons. She wasn't particularly good here either (seemed fatigued, and dressing and hairdo choices weren't flattering - a bit better in the last third with the simpler grey gown), but still had moments of brilliance, while he was just generic at best, and often rather bad.

Apparently, love is not only blind, but deaf as well.

(And I like those "experts" from Italian opera in the video title!)

Maybe Yusif is improving. He gets praise (as does Anna) in this review of Andrea Chénier. https://bachtrack.com/review-andrea-...-december-2017

I saw them in concert in Auckland doing a good programme, Anna WAS amazing and even the girls noticed. Yusif did a pretty job and was rather sweet and visibly nervous; a very adequate canbelto. But Anna is just in another class from him.

    Breaking news, unfortunate news:
Anna Netrebko is hospitalized with Covid-19. She caught it from Ildar Abdrazakov, who had a milder case.

And if she has it, Yusif Eyvazov almost certainly has it. I'm sure everyone is hoping for the best and wishing her a speedy recovery.

Maybe folks should rethink the efforts to reopen performance venues even with safety protocols in place. One certainly sympathizes with artists who want to return to their professions and audience members who have greatly missed hearing them perform. But as the cases of COVID-19 infections among singers and musicians illustrate, there is still risk involved, safety measures or not.

Yes, Anna caught it from Ildar in a performance, despite safety precautions.

Yusif has been found to have antibodies, that is, he had an asymptomatic case.

Now, the thing us, Anna has pneumonia. A percentage of cases of pulmonary fibrosis after COVID-19-related pneumonia have been described even for people who recover, so I wonder if this will have a lasting impact on her ability to sing. Sad.

Anna has just turned 49, so her age is a relative risk. Fingers crossed that she heals with no sequelae.

I was wondering about that -- since COVID-19 is a respiratory illness, are singers and musicians who depend upon strong, healthy respiratory systems at an additional risk if they contract the virus? Are they possibly putting their careers in jeopardy?

Performance reviews in the latest issue of Das Opernglas indicate that some singers are not observing all of the safety protocols -- i.e., joining hands, hugging, etc., at the end of the evening. Worrisome, to say the least.

Definitely. Up to 20% of survivors of Covid-19 have been showing up with various organ damage, including pulmonary fibrosis. Anna has Covid-19 pneumonia, I think there is a possibility that her career is over. Many come out of it with myocarditis which can lead to heart failure. Others have cognitive damage. This virus is nasty. Of course, many are asymptomatic and suffer little or no consequence, but others are not as lucky. Singers should be very careful but apparently they aren't. Singing in a closed space like they do, is one recipe for disaster. The Met appropriately won't open for another year. Houses that opened prematurely are putting their singers in great danger.

I really hope she's able to regain her health and resume singing. She's one of the world's greatest sopranos, probably at the peak of her career, and it would be horrible for her and all of her fans if that beautiful voice were damaged.
