With me it was Verdi's "Aida". In what was then Yugoslavia there were no foreign LPs sold, but the "Jugoton" company from Zagreb produced quite a lot of LPs under licence from the West, including whole operas. But additional problem was that few shops which sold the musical records in my hometown Sarajevo, LPs and singles (CDs were just appearing), had a very poor choice of classical music generally. When I did my one year long army service in the Yugoslav People's Army 1986-87 in Banja Luka, prior to studying at the university, I used every weekend going out to buy some LP with a concert or opera performance in an excellent Jugoton shop there.
