Der Jonas didn’t let a broken toe keep him from appearing in a recent concert performance of the first act from Die Walküre at the Grafenegg Festival in Austria. His only concessions to the injury were wearing a pair of sneakers with his business suit and sitting down during those times when he wasn’t singing. In the interview here, he says he was playing football (soccer) with his family last week when one of his family members (he won’t mention who!) fouled him, and in the process, one of his toes was broken.

Der Jonas is now the sponsor for the Vienna Zoo’s group of “singing” white-handed gibbons – he even cites text from one of the songs in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde that refers to the call of an ape.

I hope this doesn't give some composers of "experimental" music any ideas . . .

It's unfortunate for us, American fans, that he won't be coming here as often.

Very interesting, thanks Mary. It must be so difficult for a singer to balance work commitments and family.

I think the years from 2014-16, with his marriage breaking up and then the vocal crisis, made him do some serious thinking and decide that things couldn't continue as they were. He made some tough decisions, but they do seem to be paying off. He's stayed healthy (broken toes aside), and as he mentions in the interview, hasn't canceled any appearances this year.

And, potentially, we maybe have JK singing Paul in Die Tote Stadt to look forward to!

I simply don't see any fit between the role and Kaufmann's voice. For me the perfect singer of this is the diametrically opposed Klaus Florian Vogt.
