I Agree Am, Vickers began, as Kaufmann did purely as a lyric tenor with roles in Ballo, Carmen, but then within a year at CG he was singing Siegmund(also at Bayreuth) Aeneas and Don Carlo all with an open technique and no real top, Vickers was alway slightly dodgy above A, so it is not surprising that his vocal production had to change.
As to other similarities, both had great head notes, best example being the run up the scale at the end of the Flower song in Carmen, which is supposed to be sung with a diminuendo and not a con belto as most tenors have done.BUT not the two Js, both Jon and Jonas produce the most beautiful head notes while softening the tone at the same time. this is incredibly difficult to do.
Vickers went to Otello quite early on(1963), within 7 years of starting his career, went to Pag, but not Cav, Jonas will do both this coming summer, always an assault course for a tenor. The big difference now is that Jonas seems to want to stick with the Italian repertoire rather than German, whereas Vickers based his career around Siegmund Tristan Parsifal and Florestan in the German fach.
I get the impression that Jonas had problems with Siegmund, it is difficult for tenors because of the low tessitura.
that is why Domingo can get away with it at an advanced age because Siegmund is suited to a high baritone voice.
Kaufmann has avoided singing it since the televised Walküre at the MET, he cancelled the revival, the following year and to my knowledge has not sung it since on stage.
I wonder where he will go from here? he seems to be building towards Otello, his progress is clear, with Manrico, Don Carlo (both) and soon Turiddo and Canio.
I hope he leaves Tristan alone, at least for another five years or so.

He'll make his role debut as Otello at the Royal Opera House in 2017, with Sir Tony Pappano conducting. He's said in a number of interviews that he plans to stay away from Siegfried and the heaviest Wagner roles until well into the future. He just made his role debut as Radames last month at concert performances in Rome and recorded it (again with Sir Tony). I would think Riccardo/Gustavo in Un Ballo in Maschera and Calaf in Turandot would likely be among his next new roles. And, of course, there's the French dramatic repertoire (Vasco da Gama, Samson), which I wouldn't be surprised to find him singing at some point.

A friend of mine was lamenting only last night how long it's been since there was really great new recording of Aida (the most recent studio set, under Nikolaus Harnoncourt, was made almost 15 years ago), so was delighted to learn that Antonio Pappano has literally just finished recording the work in Rome, with the Orchestra e Coro dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia and a veritable dream-team of soloists: Anja Harteros and Jonas Kaufmann, whose collaborations in La forza del Destino, Il trovatore and Don Carlo have won plaudits galore, are the doomed lovers, with Ludovic Tézier as Amonasro, powerhouse young Russian mezzo Ekaterina Semenchuk as their nemesis Amneris, and Erwin Schrott as Ramfis. Due for release on Warner this autumn.

I was told by someone behind the scenes that various performances from the run in Rome in February were being recorded by EMI to be edited into a release. that is why none of them were broadcast by Italian Radio or TV.

It's either Sony or Warner, there is no EMI any more.

yes of course, it is difficult to think about EMI being all gone. the first LP I ever bought was ALP 1016. Flagstad and Furtwängler.
well I don't know which label will issue it, probably Sony, as JK has a new contract with them.

For me, the trouble with his CD has been that it's only available on this side of the pond in the version that has some of the arias sung in English translation. I want the original German. If this is a video of a concert in Berlin, that should solve the problem. (Assuming it's available over here.)

The best thing on this disk is Jonas singing Paul'a aria from Die Tote Stadt. I have listened to it on repeat many times. It is GORGEOUS.
