It is quite fascinating and quite different from our typical opera experience. I saw there is a DVD but You Tube clips turned me off to it. Of course there are probably better recordings, but they are rather expensive. I got this for under $3 in a search that turned it up as a single disk set, yet running the Amazon AISN through bookbutler.com to get the UPC gave a upc that brought up 2-disk sets on Ebay. We'll see.

All three of these used sets combined totaled $24 USD shipped.

O-oh Florestan might be starting on a Tristan journey to rival his Sonnambula one

It may be more a case of going overboard--or temporary insanity! But there is something about this opera that is fascinating. Maybe it is its symphonic nature, that it relies more on the story and music than staging. Kind of a weird story really (what Wagner opera isn't a weird story, but perhaps for Meistersinger?) and the main characters die at the end. I generally prefer the happy endings such as Sonnambula, but that opera has some extreme mental torture going on, which is brought out very well in the Stuttgart DVD, although far surpassing what Bellini intended since in the end Amina appears to be a shattered nervous wreck. Sonnambula remains in first place anyway, with 45 days now of continually listening 1 to 3+ times a day.

This should be the one Callas Sonnambula I don't have. It was hard to find info on this but at $3.75 plus shipping was hard to refuse. If it is indeed the fourth Callas Sonnambula (Edinburgh 1957) then it is my 25th Sonnambula and it will equal Fidelio as the top two in my collection in sheer number of CD performances.

Really liking the sound clips on this one:

Had to get this also, as Baltsa is one of the best Romeos.

This is one of the few operettas that I really like.
I have the Rothenberger set, but this one is too good to pass up.
They have a Schwartzkopf set at Dearborn music, but I think the sound might be a bit dated.

OK Paul! NO MORE MUSIC PURCHASES FOR THE REST OF OCTOBER! Can I do it?

This is also the recording of Das Land des Lächelns that I have, and I enjoy it. So far, I've resisted the urge to acquire another version with Camilla Nylund and Piotr Beczala in the leads.

I saw the Nylund set. I think it was expensive. I like her in the Fidelio DVD.

    one step at a time...

try no more purchases for 2nd October

see how we're getting along in a few hours and possibly review targets

Only 4 more hours to meet that commitment. You are smart. It is easier to take things in small chunks. Of course, then tomorrow is a different day and anything can happen.

EDIT: I just got ebay bucks so now will have to spend them!
