Call me crazy, call me a fool, but don't call me late to a Ring Cycle!
So I had the Siegfried from last year (copied below for continuity) and found the others for reasonable prices and was just too tempted to complete this cycle, even though it is one that lacks continuity outside of the conductor and orchestra. Almost every part is played by different singers for each opera. Three brunnhildes, three wotans, ... But that means if there is a dud, you only have to bear it for one opera. One of the most enticing things and you can get this with just one opera is "Gutrune: Superb performance from Eva-Maria Westbroek, probably the highlight of the cycle." Also "Lothar Zagrosek and the quite spectacular Stuttgart orchestra is one of the major positive aspects of this Cycle." Here is a review and evaluation of each of the singers near the bottom of the scroll (way, way down it goes). This one is presumably better on CD as the production if very Reggie!

Well, another curse is that those who avoid the ring miss out on massive and wonderful epic drama. On a positive note, Wagner addiction does not preclude other opera, as evidenced by my lunch hour purchase today:

Seemed worth it for the beautiful voice of Gheorghiu. Anyways, was picking up my newly released Jaho Traviata DVD that just came in at Dearborn Music and they had a 25% off sale (including the new, special ordered DVD), so...

I saw La Rondine at ROH several years ago with Angela Gheorghiu and the rather scrumptious Charles Castronovo as Ruggero Lastouc. They were both fabulous.Seemed worth it for the beautiful voice of Gheorghiu. Yesterday was "Giving Tuesday" . . . so I "gave" myself the new recording of the Fidelio Urfassung with Marlis Petersen as Leonore.
Well that is the giving spirit! It is always best to give something that you know the recipient will love, and what better way to ensure that than to give to yourself!
