In February, the Naxos label will release an audio recording (2 CDs) of Scott Davenport Richards’ opera Blind Injustice, with a libretto by David Cote. The work, which had its world premiere at the Cincinnati Opera in 2019 and was developed in conjunction with the Ohio Innocence Project, tells the story of six people who were wrongly convicted of crimes and imprisoned. They finally regained their freedom through the efforts of the aforementioned project. Baritone Joseph Lattanzi, who created the role of Hawkins Fuller in Gregory Spears’ Fellow Travelers, sings the role of the Prosecutor, while the six prisoners are portrayed by members of the CO’s Young Artist program. John Morris Russell conducts the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

I only wish this were being released in video format. With modern operas, I find I really need that visual element in conjunction with the music to fully enjoy them.

oh! oh! oh! I gotta have this one! Release date 19 March 2021 (TODAY!)
    https://www.prestomusic.com/classica...n-leonore-1805
This version of the three-act Leonore (1805) was recorded during a concert performance in the Grand Hall of the Vienna Musikverein on December 14th, 1970. Starring as Fidelio/Leonore and Florestan were Gwyneth Jones and James King, who were incomparable in these roles at the time. The rest of the cast also include outstanding singers of the age, above all Theo Adam as Pizarro, Gerd Nienstedt as Rocco, Rotraud Hansmann as Marzelline, Werner Hollweg as Jaquino and Eberhard Waechter as Don Fernando. At the beginning, there is the Leonore Overture No. 2, thrillingly performed by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Carl Melles.

Some information gleaned from interviews in the July-August issue of Das Opernglas:

    - Michael Spyres’ new solo album, “Baritenor,” will be released late this summer. Accompanied by the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, he sings arias extending from Mozart (Idomeneo) to Orff that showcase his type of voice, with both stratospheric high notes and a strong low register with baritonal depth.

    - Heldenbariton John Lundgren and his accompanist, Magnus Svensson, have recorded an album with Brahms’ Four Serious Songs, Wolf’s “MichelangeloLieder, and art songs by Swedish composers Ture Rangström and Emil Sjögren that is expected to be released sometime this autumn.

    - Lisette Oropesa’s next solo album, with conductor Corrado Rovaris and the Dresden Philharmonic, is devoted to French-language bel canto arias – i.e., including those from Rossini’s and Donizetti’s operas with French librettos. No release date is indicated. It also appears that a recording of La Traviata with Oropesa, René Barbera, and Lester Lynch will be coming onto the market, though again no projected timeframe is given.

Wow, that is a weird cover. I have the other Paer Leonora and have not taken a shine to it, but perhaps this new recording could tune me in.

Sometimes I look at the cover of a CD or DVD case and wonder what on earth the designers were thinking -- the results are certainly not appealing. I do like Leonora, and I'm rather tempted by this new recording. (If there could only be a version with Camilla Nylund and JK in the leads!)

There is a Beethoven Ninth with JK and Nylund, Norrington's later recording. Not an opera, but still great.

Yes, I had to buy that recording the minute I discovered it!
